Door Specifications

Proper installation requires matching your lock to your door dimensions. Refer to these specifications when selecting a lock:

Backset

Definition: The distance from the edge of the door to the center of the lock hole.

Common Backsets:

  • 2⅜” – Standard on most residential interior doors (increasingly common)
  • 2¾” – Standard on older residential doors and commercial doors

Measuring Tip: Measure from the edge of the door face to the center of the existing lock hole. If your door requires a backset we don’t stock, contact us at info@multlocklocksmithusa.com for options.

Door Thickness

Standard Thickness: Most residential and commercial doors are 1¾” thick.

Other Sizes: Exterior and specialty doors may be 1⅜” or 1⅞”. Verify your door thickness before ordering, as locks must fit the specific thickness.

Handing (Left vs. Right)

Definition: Handing describes which side of the door the hinges are on, viewed from outside the room.

Determining Handing:

  • Right-Hand (RH): Hinges on the right side when facing the door from outside; handle operates on the right
  • Left-Hand (LH): Hinges on the left side when facing the door from outside; handle operates on the left
  • Reverse Bevel: Indicates the door opens away from you; specify if your door closes in the opposite direction

Installation Tip: Many Mul-T-Lock locks are reversible and work on both right- and left-hand doors. Check the product specifications for confirmation.
